In short
Fares between the USA and India rise most around three peaks: the weeks before Diwali, which falls on 8 November in 2026; the US winter break from mid-December to early January; and summer, when Indian school holidays in May and June overlap US vacations and the August student intake. For those dates, ask for a fare as soon as your dates are fixed, often several months ahead, because the cheaper fare levels sell first and seldom come back. Outside the peaks, such as late January to March or September to mid-October, there is less pressure. Being flexible by a few days, flying mid-week, choosing a different US gateway or a one-stop route usually changes the price more than the day you book. No one can promise a fare will drop, so book when a fare works for you.
The peaks
- Diwali: families fly to India in the two to three weeks before it. In 2026 Diwali is on Sunday 8 November.
- The December holidays: US school winter break and Christmas, roughly mid-December to early January, is the busiest period of the year on these routes.
- Summer: Indian school holidays (about May to June) and US summer vacations overlap, followed by students leaving for the US in July and August.
- Weddings: the Indian wedding season, roughly November to February, adds demand on top of the holidays.
How early to ask
For peak dates, ask as soon as your dates are fixed. Airlines release seats at several price levels, and the lower ones go first; for December and Diwali they are often gone months ahead.
For quieter dates there is less hurry, but fares still move every day. There is no reliable cheapest day of the week to book, whatever you may read online.
What changes the price more than timing
- Moving your dates by two or three days either side.
- Flying on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday rather than a Friday or Sunday.
- A different US airport: a large gateway nearby can be cheaper than your home airport.
- One stop instead of nonstop, if a longer journey is acceptable.
- Coming back on a quieter date: the return often costs more than the outbound in peak season.
How we help
Tell us your dates and how flexible you are. An agent compares nonstop and one-stop options and nearby airports and sends the complete price, taxes and our fee included, in writing. Nothing is booked until you approve.
